The Skyline Foundation has chosen an ambitious and important project for this year's annual holiday appeal.
With the addition of Dr. Gianna Scannell as Skyline Hospital's Staff Surgeon and her expertise in the area of breast health, the foundation is raising funds to purchase a Mammotome breast biopsy machine.
The Mammotome is the latest in medical technology which allows for immediate on the spot biopsy as soon as a lump is detected. This alleviates the frustration and anxiety associated with scheduling and waiting for surgery, and the related risks of a general anesthetic and surgery.
"The foundation is extremely excited about helping to expand Skyline Hospital's services in the area of breast health and biopsy services. We are counting on the public to join us in our mission to bring this upgrade in medical care to residents of our region," said foundation coordinator Debra Reed.
Donors may dedicate their contributions to another area -- the Wayne M. Henkle Scholarship Fund, Endowment Fund or Medical Equipment Fund. Contributions may also be dedicated in honor or memory of a loved one.
"The Foundation will be happy to utilize contributions in any way the donor may desire," Reed said.
To raise community awareness about the work of the foundation during 2004, it participated in the HUGS Fair and Spring Festival and sponsored the 13th Annual Skyline Foundation Run/Fun Walk.
Three scholarships for continuing education were awarded to Shelly Skiles in the physical therapy department, Nick Puff in the emergency department, and Molly McNab a locally grown student and aspiring doctor. The foundation also provided Crag Rats Mountain Rescue group with funds to purchase upgraded communications equipment.
An "Arts and Heirlooms" ongoing fundraiser has been put into action and the foundation assisted with the work of the hospital levy committee.
Additions to the board of directors this year were DeDe Marberry, Joan Ahlers, Terri Johanson and Debra Reed, who serves as secretary and foundation coordinator. They join longtime volunteers Bill Whidden, Linda Creager, Linda Pickens, Linda Schneider, Penny White Morris, Rudy Dierickx, Georgia Sears Schorsch, and Kim Stutzman, MD.
"While gift giving this holiday season, a gift to the Skyline Foundation would help in the mission of the foundation to improve community health programs and hospital services for western Klickitat and eastern Skamania counties," Reed said.
Contributions may be mailed to Skyline Foundation, PO Box 1625, White Salmon, Wash. 98672.
