(The Center Square) – U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., is among a bipartisan group of lawmakers who want to establish a national commission on robotics.
The Dalles native Austin Schulz is known as the “Archives MacGyver” at the Oregon State Archives. The 2000 graduate of Wahtonka High School likes to figure out how things work, and a mystery presented itself shortly after he began working at the state archives in 2008. The solution he eventually found — a resourceful setup worthy of the problem-solving TV character MacGyver — has saved the state an estimated $5.5 million, according to the Oregon Secretary of State’s office.
Without the final touches, the large Styrofoam-looking sign appears monochrome. Teal and off-white shapes were the only indicator of the intended design: a leaping salmon superimposed over a forestry backdrop. This is the final stage of the new sign for White Salmon’s City Hall.
Throughout the Danner Boots factory floor in Portland, computer monitors provide workers with updates every 15 seconds on where productivity levels are — and where they should be. While that struck a reporter as intense time pressure, it was seen by Chris Perrotti, the commercialization manager for Danner, in a wholly different light: “I love it. It’s really organized, just like the military.”
