Jared McDonald scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a wild pitch that skipped over the backstop and Columbia High closed out its March baseball schedule last Thursday with a 7-6 victory over Goldendale at Hecomovich Field.
Taylor Champion, Greg Tellez and McDonald provided the offensive spark for the Bruins (4-1), combining for six of CHS's nine hits, including four that went for extra bases.
Austin Krentz (1-0) picked up the victory in relief of McDonald, throwing two scoreless innings after the Timberwolves had rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
Bruins Coach Larry McCutcheon said "sloppy defense" in the fifth--when the Bruins made three of their five errors--let the Timberwolves back into the game.
An inning earlier, Goldendale (1-5) capitalized on three hits and an error to push three runs across with none out and narrow Columbia's lead to 6-3.
The Bruins built their 6-0 advantage with two runs in the first on a run-scoring double by Tellez and an RBI single by Kyle Reeves, a two-run homer by Champion (the first of his career) in the second, and a two-run fourth that featured a triple by McDonald and a fielder's choice by Tellez.
In the seventh, Goldendale had the tying and go-ahead runs at third and second bases before Krentz induced a fly out to second and a second-to-first ground out to end the game.
Coming Up:
The Bruins return to action on Tuesday, April 10, with a non-league game at Kalama. They then open SWW 1A League Trico Division play on April 13 at Ilwaco.
McCutcheon said Columbia has been practicing every day during spring break in preparation for its first Trico double-header. One of its points of emphasis has been fielding, cutting down on the errors.
"That's something we've been working very hard on to correct," he said. "We just need to make the routine plays. Once we start doing that, we should be fine."
At Lyle 11-8, Trout Lake/Glenwood 1-4:
The Cougars improved to 4-0 in Greater Columbia B League play last Friday with a sweep of the Eagles.
Mike Eiesland got the win for Lyle (6-3 overall) in game one, finishing the five-inning contest with a one-hitter and eight strikeouts.
"Mike was in control of this game from the start," Cougars Coach Scott Myers noted. "After an error in the first (inning) that cost him a run, he didn't allow a baserunner the rest of the game."
The Cougars backed up Eiesland's strong pitching with a 12-hit attack that accounted for 10 earned runs off losing pitcher Kris Wood.
Noah LaFrenz went 3 for 3 and drove in a team-high four runs. Dillon Huffman also had three hits and Chris Wolff was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in.
Eiesland and Brady Huffman each added a run-scoring base hit.
TLG's lone hit--an RBI single--came off the bat of Parker
In game two, Cord Cothren was 4 for 4 at the plate, with a double and a triple, and struck out 10 and yielded five hits in seven innings of work.
"Cord pitched a good game," Myers said. "He got a little tired in the sixth inning (when he allowed four runs), but he finished good."
Wolff also was perfect with the bat, going 3 for 3 with a double as part of a Lyle offense that connected for nine hits.
For TLG, Dannon Kavanagh and Kris Woods had run-scoring base hits, and Bradley Woodruff hit a double.
