Changes are coming to the Port of Klickitat's Bingen Point business park starting Sept. 7. On that date, the Port will begin the "Harbor Drive Improvement Project," and a key section of road into the Port's facilities will be closed for an estimated seven weeks.
Harbor Drive, which runs from Lakeview Street south to the traffic circle, will be closed during the project and all traffic will be routed along the west side of Bingen Harbor.
"We recognize this closure will be an inconvenience to our tenants and visitors," said Port Executive Director Marc Thornsbury, "but it is necessary to allow the project contractor to complete the work in a timely fashion and while the weather is still suitable."
The detour will route vehicles east through Marina Park and then south on the old harbor dike road before reconnecting to Bingen Point Way.
To improve safety and reduce traffic congestion, the Port is asking residents and visitors to limit non-essential travel to the Port's facilities and parks located south of the construction zone, including Sailboard Park, during the project.
"We urge drivers to take extra care while using the detour," said Thornsbury. "The west side of the Marina Park parking lot will be carrying incoming and outgoing traffic where there is usually none, and the old dike road that will be used for access is narrow and unpaved."
In addition, removal of the traffic circle will require the complete closure of the intersection it serves. That work is expected to occur during the third week of October. This closure will require that traffic be rerouted along the west side of the Port's facilities for 24 to 48 hours. Signs and other traffic control devices will be used to warn and direct drivers.
