She was raised and attended schools in Ashby. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Harold E. Carlson on July 18, 1936, in Ashby. They moved to Hood River, Ore., in 1942 and she went to work for A.G.A. (now Diamond Fruit.) as a sorter and box maker. She retired and then in 1987 moved to Boardman where she lived until moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston.

She attended the Boardman Christian Center, was a member of the Boardman Garden Club, Greenfield Grange, and was active in the Boardman Senior Center.

Elizabeth enjoyed gardening, fishing, going to church, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, John and Bill Carlson, both of Boardman, Ore., daughter Kay Thomas of Boardman, brother George Dunkel of Valentine, Neb., sister Lucile Bosch of Albany, Ore., and 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold Carlson, brother Lewis Dunkel, and two infant sisters.

Funeral service will be on Dec. 12, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.

Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Hood River at 2:30 p.m. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.

JYTTE BUSSE SCHMIDT

Jytte Schmidt passed away from cancer on Nov. 3, 2001, at age 69.

Mrs. Schmidt was born in Skovshoved, Denmark, on May 16, 1932, to Harry George and Else Viola Busse. She married Alfred William Schmidt in 1954 and emigrated to the United States in 1964. Mr. Schmidt died in 1998.

She began work as a dental hygienist in Copenhagen and later received a degree in Interior Design through the University of Denmark. She worked as an interior designer in California and Oregon. She also owned and operated Copenhagen Imports in Arcata, Calif.

She moved with her family to Oregon in 1977. Her hobbies included knitting, painting and playing classical piano. She also enjoyed nature walks, gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include sons, Torben Michael Schmidt, of Hillsboro, Ore., Joachim Christian Schmidt of Brisbane, Calif., daughter Helle Martine Schmidt of Hood River, Ore., granddaughter Heidi Maiken Shields of McMinnville, Ore., mother Else Busse of Gentofte, Denmark; and brother Mogens Busse of Charlottenlund, Denmark.

FRANCES MAE BROWN

Frances Mae "Frankie" Brown of North Bonneville passed away on Nov. 29 in Vancouver, Wash., at the age of 77. She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 5, 1924, to Horace James and Dolly Rena (Huddleston) Redding.

Frankie was raised in southern California where she worked for three decades as a housekeeper. She was married to Cecil Wombles for 31 years before he passed away in September of 1972.

In 1975, Frankie moved to Parkdale, Ore., and worked for Lage Orchards as a fruit sorter and packer for 25 years. Ten years ago, she settled in North Bonneville. Frankie was active in the Senior Center in North Bonneville, the Grange, and the VFW. She loved to crochet dolls, blankets and afghans, and also enjoyed sewing. Square dancing, gardening and baking pies were other hobbies. Frankie loved her cats.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Dillingham of North Bonneville, sons Jim Wombles and his wife, Wendy, of Sandy, Ore., and Walter Wombles of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Also surviving are her brother, John Redding and his sister Margaret Fortner, both of Southern California, sister Jewell Allen of Georgia, 16 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Wombles, and daughter Christine Leatherman.

A memorial service for Ms. Brown was scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at First Baptist Church, 290 N.W. Roosevelt St., Stevenson, Wash. Gardner Funeral Home, White Salmon, was in charge of arrangements.

CARL HERMO

Carl Alan Hermo died Dec. 2, 2001, in Berrien Springs, Mich. He was born April 10, 1977, in Seoul, South Korea.

He lived in Korea until 1984 when he and his brother, John, came to the United States. On June 9, 1985, he and John moved to White Salmon, Wash. Carl attended Mid-Columbia Adventist School in Hood River through the 10th grade, then went to Laurelwood Adventist Academy in Gaston, Ore., where he graduated in 1996.

He attended Southern Adventist University in Tennessee for one year, then went back to Laurelwood Academy to work for a year as assistant boys dean and to take classes at a local satellite college. From there he went to Weimar College in California. He then decided to attend Andrews University in Barrien Springs, Mich., to be near his very special friends. He planned to graduate next summer with a degree in business accounting.

During vacation time, Carl was home in White Salmon enjoying many outdoor activities, including mountain biking and snowboarding with friends. He worked during several summers selling religious books door to door and enjoyed knowing that he was doing something that had the potential for changing people's lives for the better.

Carl will be remembered by his parents, John and Carol Woodruff; his brothers Caleb Woodruff and John Hermo; grandparents Melvin and Grace Woodruff and Alan and Ina Hermo; and many dear friends and relatives.

Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Eddie Hermo.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in White Salmon, Wash. Visitation will be held Dec. 14 at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon. Interment will be at White Salmon Cemetery.

MAE JACQUES

Mae Ellen (Beadell) Jaques, a life-long resident of Hood River died on Dec. 3, 2001. She was 85 years old.

Born near Rockford in rural Hood River on Nov. 24, 1916, Mae was the youngest of three daughters born to Edgar Levi Beadell and Mary Olivia (Royer) Beadell.

Mae graduated from Odell High School and married her high school sweetheart, Robert Clifford (Ky) Jaques. They were married in Stevenson, Wash., on June 1, 1937 in a double wedding with her sister Murna Beadell and Vay Rhoades. The couples remained close throughout their lives.

Mae and Ky lived, worked and raised their family in Hood River. Mae worked at JC Penney during World War II while Ky served in the Coast Guard. In 1941, she and Ky opened Central Food Market. Located at the corner of Fourth and Oak, the store, locally renowned for its meat market and home grocery delivery, served the community for more than 32 years. After the store closed, Mae sold real estate for Hershner & Bell-Farrell Agency before retiring in 1979. She was an honorary employee of Jaques, Sharp, Sherrerd & FitzSimons, performing various clerical and other duties when and wherever she could be helpful.

Mae was an active member of the community. She was a long-time member of the Valley Christian Church, volunteered at FISH and supported events at the Hood River County Schools. She also loved gardening and travel, but most cherished spending time with her family.

Mae is mourned by her many friends and family. She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Robert Jaques, her two sons and their spouses, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her son, Ronald Jaques and his wife, Shirley, of Boring, and granddaughter Jacqueline C.J. Smythe and great-granddaughter Halsey Healani Smythe of Honolulu, Hawaii and granddaughter Constance Dawn Jaques of New York, N.Y. survive her.

She is also survived by her son Jerry Jaques and his wife, Deborah, of Hood River, and grandchildren Meredith Elyse Jaques of Burlington, Vermont and Aaron Robert Jaques of Eugene.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Anderson's Tribute Center.

RUTH J. MURRAY

Ruth J. Murray of Portland, Ore., passed away on Dec. 2, 2001, at the age of 78.

Ruth was born on April 14, 1923, in Hood River, Ore., to Corbett Alexander and Elda Jackson. Ruth grew up and was educated in Hood River. She and Charles Murray were married in Stevenson, Wash., in 1943.

Ruth worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" in Seattle during the war. The family moved to McMinnville in 1951 and to Tillamook in 1960.

She was a long-time member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tillamook and was a member of the church guild. Ruth worked at the local food bank and was in many other ways an asset to the community.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of Portland, daughters Joy Brown and Linda Hatfield of Portland, and Toni Wyss of Newberg, Ore., and a brother, Jack Alexander of Portland.

She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Ruth will be on Dec. 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 11229 N.E. Prescott, Portland. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the St. Alban's Altar Guild. Arrangements under care of Waud's Funeral Home, Tillamook.

HELEN M. LINDQUIST

Helen Marie Lindquist, a Hood River Valley resident died at her home on Dec. 7, 2001. She was 89 years of age.

Helen Marie Lindquist was born Dec. 17, 1911, in The Dalles, Oregon to David and Theresa Lindquist. This is where she spent her childhood growing up and attending school.

Helen moved to Hood River, Ore., with her husband James Leslie Woodcock about 40 years ago. They purchased acreage in the Oak Grove area and built a home there. She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, who died Jan. 14, 1993.

Many of her friends remember her as a great pianist. At one time she played in a local band with other accomplished artists among Doc Severenson in The Dalles. Not only did she enjoy playing with different groups, but also enjoyed passing on her talents by teaching others to play the piano. When she wasn't playing or teaching piano, she enjoyed feeding the birds and spending time with her friends.

Helen is survived by many close friends that thought of her as family.

DALE D. SMITH

Dale D. Smith, 76, formerly of Hood River, Ore., died Dec. 7, 2001, in Sun City West, Ariz., after a lengthy illness.

After retiring to Sun City West, he thoroughly enjoyed playing golf, working in his yard, baking and playing with his dogs, Sophie and Teddi.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Otis Smith, his son, Michael Dale Smith, and his great-grandson, Philip Brady Almeter.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne M. Smith of Sun City West, his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Almeter and Douglas Hailey of Sun City West; his son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Mel Smith of Anchorage, Alaska; his daughter, Amy Smith of Rogue River, Ore.

Also surviving are his mother, Frances M. Smith of Hood River, his sister, LaVaughn Scoville of Sun City, Ariz., brothers Donald L. Smith of National City, Calif., Billy H. Smith of Sun City, and Connie L. Smith of Hood River.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

RICHARD W. FLOWERS

Richard Warren Flowers, a Hood River, Ore., resident died Dec. 4, 2001 at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. He was 73 years of age.

Private family services will be held at Anderson's Tribute Center.

Richard Warren Flowers was born Jan. 18, 1928 in Warwick, N.D. to John and Jenny (Johnson) Flowers. He was raised and educated in North Dakota, then served in the U.S. Army.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator in highway construction for 20 years. He moved to Hood River in 1969 and worked as a truck driver for Underwood Fruit Company.

On Jan. 1, 1986, he and Barbara Jackson were married in San Diego, Calif. He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Flowers of Hood River; sons Warren Flowers of Germany and David Mordhorst of Carson City, Nev.; a sister, Della Korting of Redmond, Ore., and three step daughters, Penny Anderson of Oregon City; Jill Cannon of Hood River, and Tracy Crieder of Portland, Ore. Twelve grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

HOWARD E. SOOTER

Howard Elbert Sooter, 71, passed away in Underwood, Wash., on Dec. 3, 2001. He was born in Walla Walla, Wash., to Elbert Eugene and Elva May (Skeen) Sooter on Dec. 14, 1929.

Howard grew up in the Willamette Valley and served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. After his discharge from military service, he settled 9n the Underwood area. Mr. Sooter worked as a surveyor for the Corps of Engineers and retired in 1974.

He loved to tinker around on his tractor and loved hunting. Howard was a very kind, generous person.

He is survived by his wife, Con'E Sooter of Underwood; son Elbert Eugene Sooter of Longview, Wash., one granddaughter, one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his stepchildren Conniejo McCloud of Coos Bay, Ore., Steven DuQuist of Underwood, Sherrie Kittelstevdt of Spokane, Wash., and Tonya Hernandez of Portland, Ore. Ten stepchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
