Nelson Tire takes Little League title

Windmaster hung around early, putting runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but Cameron was able to repeatedly pitch Nelson Tire out of danger.

The Nelson Tire bats sprang to life in the bottom of the fourth.

JJ Mears got things rolling with a double down the right field line to plate the first two runs of the inning and was promptly driven in by a double off the bat of Michael Hasegawa.

Sammy Stevenson would later triple to bring in two more runs and Cameron capped the scoring by ripping a bases-loaded double to bring in three runs.

The victory gave Nelson Tire an undefeated season and its second league title to close the career of coach Larry Williams.

In the softball championship Little King took on Valley Ag with the two teams taking a close game into the fifth inning before Little King pulled away for a 6-3 win.

Jayden Shelton for Little King and Hannah McNerney for Valley Ag were able to keep the offenses off-balance with Little King taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the fifth.

That's when the blue-shirted Hood River team busted the game open with three runs.

Shelton drove in the first with a double, Emily Elifritz drove in another with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt. Little King then got another run with a groundout.

Valley Ag got a triple from Lindsey Merton on a hard-hit ball to the fence in the top of the sixth. It wound up turning into a home run when she was able to cross the plate on an overthrow. The hit gave Valley Ag some life, but could not get any more runs off Shelton and Little King was able to celebrate the championship.

"It feels great," said coach Joey Shelton. "It was a wonderful group of girls."

Next up for local Little Leaguers is the All-Stars, which will be in The Dalles this year and start later this month.
