Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Marvin Dale Turner was born March 10, 1928, in Vernonia, Oregon, to Thomas and Silvia (Jones) Turner, the fourth child of five, and passed away on Aug. 22, 2025, at age 97. He went to public schools at Vernonia grades 1-12, and participated in sports, drama and music.
Marvin coached Little League baseball and decided to attend OCE at Monmouth where he graduated in 1951. At OCE, he met Ruth Frick, the love of his life, and they were married in December 1950. He was drafted into the Marine Corps and served in California and North Carolina, where their son, Tom, was born.
After discharge in 1953, the family moved to Pendleton, Oregon, where Marvin taught sixth grade and daughter, Susan, was born. The family moved to Adams, where he was an eighth grade teacher and principal until 1961, when a principal’s job opened up in Hood River, Oregon. Marv’s final move was to Westside Elementary School until retirement in 1986.
Music was a large part of Marv’s life. He came from a large family who loved to sing country and western songs, accompanying themselves on guitar, uke, and harmonica. In Pendleton, he was a quartette member of the Pendle-Tone Tutors, who sang on many occasions around town. After moving to Hood River, Marv sang in barbershop choruses. Marv sang in the choir at Asbury Methodist Church, and when the director retired, Marv became the director, holding the position for 30 years.
He also loved golf, billiards and traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad. Mostly, though, he loved people!
Marvin was pre-deceased by daughter Susan (June 2023).
Many thanks to Anderson’s Tribute Center, Hood River, Brookside Manor, Providence Hospice, and the staff at Dr. Vogt’s office. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Anderson’s Tribute Center, Hood River.
