A 60-yard punt return for a touchdown by Dusty Vorce got the Lyle Cougars off and running on their way to a season-opening 40-16 victory over Soap Lake in B-8 football action there last Saturday.
Vorce later scored on a 75-yard run in the second quarter as the Cougars mounted a 22-0 lead. He finished the afternoon with 113 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Callan Johnson carried eight times for 80 yards, and scored on runs of 40 and 4 yards. Noah LaFrenz rushed five times for 25 yards and ran for a third-quarter TD from 13 yards out.
All told, the Cougars averaged 6.7 yards per attempt against the Eagles, pounding the ball 37 times into the line for a net of 247 yards on the ground.
Justin Carlson complemented Lyle's running game, completing 3-of-5 passes for one touchdown and 66 yards, with no interceptions.
The Cougars' senior quarterback hooked up with Chris Cochenour for a 22-yard scoring play in the third quarter to account for the visitors' final points.
Lyle's stingy defense allowed a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, a 33-yard scoring pass in the fourth and two runs for conversion during the non-league contest.
Johnson, a linebacker, led the way for the Cougars, recording 11 tackles, 16 assists, a sack and one fumble recovery.
Vorce registered eight tackles and seven assists. James Stanovich had four tackles and eight assists and recovered a fumble. Kalvin Kiernan also sacked Soap Lake's quarterback once.
"It's always good to start off the season with a win, especially coming off an oh-nine season last year," Cougars Coach David Barthlow noted. "The team has really been working hard and that hard work paid off with a win."
Lyle visits Ione, Ore., this Friday night for a non-league B-8 encounter.
