Longview Fibre Company is providing limited public access to most of its Oregon and Washington timberlands, effective Sept. 29.
"This rainfall enables a limited reopening of eight of Longview Fibre's nine tree farms which have been closed because of the forest-fire threat with this year's drought conditions," said Dave Bowden, senior vice president-timber for the company. "Although gates will remain closed, hunters and other recreationists may walk-in and they can drive into the ungated areas."
Bowden said, "If we have additional substantial rainfall later this fall, we will open the gates. However, a continued lack of moisture could force us to again close our timberlands to public access due to fire danger."
Longview Fibre tree farms open include: in Oregon -- Coast, Nehalem, Deer Island, Clackamas, Silver Falls and Mid-Columbia; in Washington -- Southwest, Skagit and Mid-Columbia.
He noted only the Chelan Tree Farm in Central Washington will remain closed, as that region did not receive rain.
