CAST and Columbia Gorge Community College kick off the holiday season with a fun-filled production of The Emperor's New Clothes, adapted by Charlotte Chorpenning from the tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
Performances are Dec. 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Dec. 4, 5, 11, and 12 at 2 p.m.
In this highly entertaining, clever retelling of the popular fable, the Emperor of China cares for nothing but clothes. The minister of the robes plays on this weakness to rob the royal weavers and persecute the Empress.
Two rogues looking for adventure convince the Emperor they can weave a cloth which cannot be seen by anyone unfit for the position he holds. Everyone is afraid to confess that they cannot see the new clothes the Emperor orders.
The resulting comic situations enable the rogues to save the Empress and the weavers and expose the villainy of the minister. The Emperor proudly walks in procession clad in nothing but a straight little shirt to show his people the glory of his new clothes.
Playwright Charlotte Chorpenning was one of the trailblazers of American theatre for young audiences. She served as Children's Theatre Director at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago for 20 years, writing some 55 plays for family audiences during her tenure there. The Emperor's New Clothes is one of her most frequently produced works.
The Emperor's New Clothes is a co-production of CAST and Columbia Gorge Community College's theater program.
Directed by Richard Parker, theater instructor at CGCC and familiar actor and director for CAST, the play marks another step forward in collaboration between the two, integrating CGCC theatre students into CAST plays. About one third of the company members are students in the theatre rehearsal and performance class offered this term at CGCC, earning college credit for their participation.
The remaining company members are community volunteers of all ages, and include a number of performers frequently seen on the CAST stage.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, $8 for children 11 and under, and $10 for groups of 10 or more. A special family ticket is available for $40 and provides admission for 2 adults and 2 students or children.
