&nbps; Gorge United surrendered as many goals in last Saturday's match against the Tri-Mountain Avalanche as it had in its first seven matches of the fall U-18 league season.
But United still walked off its home field with a 4-3 victory--its sixth of the season--on the strength of second-half goals by Alexis Gomez and Mark Lovrin.
In what he described as "an error-prone victory," United Coach Pero Lovrin said, "We lacked the focus and intensity that was our strength this year. However, in my experience, you always have a game like this and hope you do enough good things to prevail."
United (6-1-1) did just that, overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the first half with goals by Martn Mendoza in the 30th minute and Lovrin in the 35th minute.
"Martn surprised the Avalanche goalkeeper with a well-taken shot from 30 yards out to even the score," Lovrin noted, "and United took the lead five minutes later with the highlight goal for this season."
Ramon Villanueva played a first-touch ball to Francisco Villanueva, who crossed the ball to the far side to Gomez, who headed the ball to Lovrin for a head from 4 yards.
"Everything about this play was one touch, with great soccer technique that makes this a beautiful game. Great stuff," Lovrin said.
White Salmon lost its lead 18 minutes into the second half, however, when the Avalanche capitalized on United's inability to clear the ball after a free kick.
United regained the advantage seven minutes later, though, on a goal by Gomez. It added an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Lovrin scored his second goal off a corner kick.
The Avalanche made it 4-3 in the 88th minute.
"There was too much excitement and too many twists for my taste," Coach Lovrin noted. "It seems that we were never in control, but that is the challenge we all strive to accomplish."
