So much for those warm, early-season conditions.
After a premature dose of summer in Pendleton on March 29, the Hood River Valley track team revisited the cold wind and rain of early spring last Saturday at The Dalles Invitational.
But, while the air did present a cold reminder of winter, the Eagles still performed at a peak level and posted a total of 35 personal records.
“Everyone is doing great for this time in the season,” coach Shawn Meyle said. “There was some pretty exciting stuff going on in The Dalles, and I like where we’re at right now.”
The Eagles posted 13 top-eight finishes at the meet, which featured two Intermountain Conference rivals (Crook County and Redmond), 4A power Cleveland, and a number of small schools from around the state, including Culver and Scappoose.
No official scores were kept, but as Meyle tells his athletes, they are only competing against themselves until the May 23-24 district competition.
“It’s nice to see where we’re at against some of the IMC schools,” he said, “but it’s way too early to worry about what they’re doing.”
The Eagles will look to improve upon Saturday’s effort today when they travel to Gresham for a non-conference dual meet against the Gophers.
Leading the way for HRV at The Dalles were a number of usual suspects, including seniors Christy Paul and Ben Albright, juniors Anna Hidle and Suni Davis, and sophomore Alex Jimenez.
Paul, a two-event state qualifier in 2002, placed third in the 3,000 meters (10:48.69), but elected to sit out the 1,500. Hidle, who also qualified for two events at state last year, won the 400 meters in 1:02.21 and tied for second in the high jump at 5 feet, 0 inches.
Albright posted PR’s in both the 200 meters (23.87) and 100 meters (11.81), placing fourth and seventh, respectively. Davis posted a PR in the 200 (27.67) for fourth place, while Jimenez had two third places in the 1,500 meters (4:28.68) and 3,000 meters (9:49.87).
Sophomore Kristen Hedges had dual PR’s in the triple jump (31 feet, 1.25 inches) and 100 meters (13.63), taking fourth and seventh places, respectively.
Likewise, freshman teammate Markee Cox finished third in the 100 meters (13.04) and took sixth in the 200 meters (27.97), posting dual PR’s in the process.
Additional top-eight finishes for the girls were McKenna Hering (8th, pole vault), Jessica Wienhold (8th, high jump) and Allison Byers (8th, 3,000 meters).
For the boys, junior Mike Weber finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches, while senior Mitchell Bohn took sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:36.04) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:07.35).
Also placing in the top eight for the boys were sophomore Adam Mack (7th, 400 meters, 55.17), sophomore Adam Brown (6th, 200 meters, 24.18), and freshman Travis Moore (8th, high jump, 5’2”).
The HRV relay teams also had a strong showing on Saturday. The boys 4 x 400-meter relay team of Albright, Mack, Brown and Jon Gehrig placed third with a time of 3:42.42, while the girls 4 x 400 team of Cox, Hedges, Davis and Hidle took second in 4:12.82.
