The Hood River Valley boys track team had a slightly different experience than the HRV girls team at last weekend’s district competition.
While the Eagles did post eight top-10 finishes, the best any of the hometown kids did was junior Mike Weber’s fourth-place finish in the pole vault.
Weber jumped 13 feet, 6 inches to equal a season PR, but he needed to go another foot to get into the top two. He also earned a 10th place in the javelin with a throw of 143 feet, 5 inches.
Meanwhile, the Eagles’ other state hopefuls — the members of the distance crew — didn’t fare as well. Senior Jon Gehrig, who had hoped to qualify in the 800 meters, finished seventh with a time of 2:04.
Gehrig also finished among the top 10 in the 1,500 with a time of 4:23.78. Teammate Alex Jimenez took a seventh place in the 3,000 meters (9:47.49) and a 15th in the 1,500 (4:35.83).
“The altitude seemed to affect our distance guys,” coach Shawn Meyle said. “It probably didn’t allow them to run their best races.”
Besides Weber, the best finish of the day was the 4 x 400 relay team (Adam Mack, Adam Brown, Gehrig and Mitchell Bohn), which took fifth overall with a time of 3:41.95.
The 4 x 100 relay team of Brown, Mack, Ben Albright and Matt Coerper finished sixth with a time of 45.44.
Albright’s best finish was in the 200, where he ran a 23.50 for 10th place. For complete results, see www.hrvtrack.com.
