Merle Edwin Phillips Jr., lovingly known as “Bill” to his friends and family, passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 77. Merle was born on Oct. 19, 1948, in Stark, Kansas, to Merle Edwin Phillips Sr. and Ester Phillips, both of whom preceded him in death. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Oregon, where he would spend the majority of his life. His time away was only during his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country.
Merle pursued some college coursework and went on to build a respected career as a skilled millwright. Over the years, he worked at DEE Lumbermill, SDS Lumbermill in Bingen, Washington, and Oregon Cherry Growers in The Dalles, Oregon. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft.
A man who deeply loved the outdoors, Merle found joy in fishing and hunting. He cherished the friendships he built with those who shared his passion, and he took great pride in the close circle of friends he maintained throughout his life. He also gave back to his community by volunteering for several years with the Gleaners Food Bank in The Dalles.
Merle was married three times, most recently to his beloved wife, Caroline Phillips. Together, they shared 33 years of life in The Dalles and raised their daughter, Morgan Phillips. He is also survived by his children from a previous marriage: Mike, Michelle, and Marci. In addition to his wife and children, Merle is survived by his siblings: Roger Phillips, Bruce Phillips, Linda Phillips, Elton Graves, and Ellen.
Merle will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, love of family, and deep appreciation for the outdoors. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, and lasting friendships.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 10 from 1-6 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place on April 11 at noon at Odd Fellows Cemetery 18th Cherry Heights, The Dalles.
Merle will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
