Hood River Valley Swim Team's Mariah Rawding and Scott Bergstrom combined to set six team records and 12 personal records last month during Oregon Swimming's 2008 Long Course 11 and Over Championships in Eugene.
Rawding, a 12-year-old from Husum, recorded six personal records (PRs) in six events and top-seven finishes in each of her five event finals at the July 24-27 meet.
Her team records--for girls 11-12 years of age--came in the 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter breast stroke and 50-meter breast stroke.
Bergstrom, 13, of Snowden established new HRVST standards for boys 13-14 with PR-setting performances in the 800-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly. Moreover, he won two preliminaries (100, 200 butterfly), posted six PRs and placed in the top five in all six of his event finals.
His best finishes were seconds in the 800 and the 400 freestyle swims, and the 200 butterfly.
Matthew Bergstrom, 11, of Snowden swam in four event finals for HRVST's Osprey, finishing second once, fourth once and eighth twice.
Anna Anderson, 17, of Snowden competed in six events for HRVST and placed 15th in her one 15-and-over final, the 200 breast stroke.
As a team, HRVST finished the meet in 17th place.
Other news:
Rawding and Anderson have been chosen for the Oregon Zone Team that will take part in the Aug. 5-9 Western Zone Championships at Mt. Hood Community College, in Gresham.
"The last time a swimmer from the Hood River Valley Swim Team was at the Zone meet was in 2000 when Neticia Enesi and Oliver Burton attended, so it's pretty exciting for us," said Osprey Coach Shelly Rawding.
