Smoke and fire rise from a home on Ninth Street where a fire ate through its attic.
Crews scale a roof to pump water through a window directly into the fire while ground crews attack it with hoses from north and south.
Flames ripped through the roof of a home near May Street Elementary School Friday morning before crews knocked them down.
The fire broke out in the attic of a home in the 800 block of Ninth Street in the early hours of the morning, destroying most of its roof in a smoky blaze. Local fire crews doused the fire by about 9:50 a.m.
Nobody was injured in the fire. Two adult men and a dog were in the house when smoke plumed up through the attic, but they left the home unharmed.
Hood River Fire engines responded to the fire at about 8:30 a.m. Smoke was billowing in a heavy cloud from the attic.
Crews attacked the fire with hoses from the north and south, while another firefighter, Westside Lt. Josh Beckner, scaled the roof with a ladder and pumped water directly into the fire through a west facing window. Several jets of flame roared out of the window, directly in front of his face.
Neighboring homes were threatened, but hoses rained down water on them to prevent the fire from spreading.
After an onslaught of water, fire crews got the best of the blaze. Once smoke cleared, the gashed roof came into view.
Fire departments assisting on scene included West Side Fire, Pine Grove, Cascade Locks, Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, and Klickitat County.
About a dozen onlookers gathered at the scene, where smoke was at times thick enough to sting their eyes and make them cough.
May Street and Ninth Street were closed to traffic during the fire response.
Out-going Hood River Fire Chief Devon Wells said a cause of the fire hasn’t yet been determined.
