Have you ever wondered what type of nature comes alive at night or had the desire to explore the evening environment?
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum is offering guests an opportunity to discover nature's activities after the sun goes down. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., the Discovery Center will host its annual Harvest Moon Walk.
Guided by Linda Turner of the USDA Forest Service and Steve Rice, school programs coordinator at the Discovery Center, the walk will head down the Lewis and Clark Riverfront Trail to Taylor Lakes and the Columbia River shore. A beach on the Columbia's shore will be the group's destination. Estimated total length of the walk is a mile and a half, downhill and back.
The moonlight walk will include occasional stops for interactive interpretation inspired by stars, planets, nocturnal wildlife, and the sights and sounds of commerce.
"People are used to exploring nature during the daylight," said Steve Rice. "It's exciting for us to be able to share what the night time environment has to offer and awaken new senses of observation."
The walk will leave from the front entrance of the center.
Families are asked to leave pets and bicycles behind and keep flashlights off as much as possible to preserve each other's night vision. All ages are welcome, and the trail is wheelchair accessible.
The walk is free for everyone. Donations are appreciated and will benefit children's programs at the Discovery Center.
