HOOD RIVER — Monday’s game versus Gresham was to be a measuring stick for the HRV softball team.
After falling to the Gophers 2-1 on April 1, the Eagles were eager to prove how far they had come since their first league game.
But instead, HRV showed how much work it has left to do if it hopes to secure the fourth and final state playoff berth, committing five errors in the 4-1 loss.
The Gophers took advantage of every opportunity HRV afforded them and scored each of their runs after miscues — two in the first, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Eagle offense never found a rhythm either, accounting for just three hits.
The loss put HRV at 5-4 in the Mt. Hood Conference (10-9 overall) and in a must-win situation today at David Douglas, which is currently tied for fourth place.

Friday’s game with Parkrose was a far more rosy affair for the Eagles as they banged out 16 hits to bury the Broncos 13-1 in five innings.
Lesley Betts knocked in four runs and went 2-3 at the plate to lead the Eagles. Michelle Connors, Becki Flory and Tara Level each contributed to the offensive explosion with two RBIs apiece.
Connors was 3-4, Flory 2-3 and Level 2-2. Also knocking in runs on the afternoon were Whitney Zuercher (2-3), Angie Martin (1-3) and Talia Hinman (2-3).
Hinman also pitched all five innings and struck out seven to go with two hits and one walk.
HRV hopes the defense reverts to its early-season form when it takes on David Douglas today.
