Teresa Schuemann, a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer who lives in Bingen, recently returned from the University Games in Beijing, China, where she served on the Sports Medicine Team, primarily with the American swimming squad. The games went from Aug. 15-Sept. 1.
Schuemann, who works at Skyline Hospital in White Salmon and volunteers with the Hood River Valley High School athletic department, saw plenty of competition and culture.
"It was a wonderful trip and experience," she said. "In a nutshell, the U.S. swim team did fantastic, capturing 39 of 51 available medals, winning gold in all relays except one (women’s 4 x 400 relay) which they won silver behind China by two-hundredths of a second. It was very exciting.
"I saw the U.S. win bronze in men’s basketball, gold in women’s basketball, team bronze in diving, gold in men’s volleyball (all as a spectator)," she said. "I was also able to sample some of the tourist things with the silk market, pearl market, Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, the Great Wall and sunrise Tai Chi in the parks of Beijing.
"The culture is very different, with decision-making appearing fairly difficult, and the food is very different from our own version of Chinese," she said.
Schuemann applied for the trip through the United States Olympic Committee and spent time at the committee's Colorado Springs, Colo., facility in what she called "a mutual selection process" before being chosen for the trip. She hopes to serve on the medical team at an upcoming Olympic Games, but isn't sure if she will be in Beijing when it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Scheuemann believes that if this year's University Games are any indication, the 2008 Olympics will be successful.
"If the way they ran this event is any indication, they will do a great job," she said.
