"Oregon Voices," a presentation of Oregonians and their work through oral history, customs, songs, stories, and traditional lore, will be presented by historian and folklorist Twilo Scofield on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at the Columbia Discovery Center in The Dalles.
The voices of Oregon, past and present, resound throughout the six geographical regions of our state. Geography and natural resources prescribed where certain groups settled. Ethnic and occupational influences shaped Oregon's unique regional personalities and created a sense of place for its residents.
This presentation focuses on several ethnic groups including the Old Believers, the Czechs of Malin, the Scandinavians, and other ethnic communities in Oregon.
Scofield discusses occupations including logging, fishing, farming, mining, and the work of everyday living. Her presentation is a celebration of the diverse populations that call Oregon home.
This program is made possible through funding from the Oregon Council for the Humanities (OCH)an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. OCH is dedicated to providing opportunities for lifelong learning in communities and throughout the state.
"Oregon Voices" is part of the Special Guest Speakers series being offered at the Center this summer.
