Maryhill Museum will present a Family Fun Day and host the 7th annual Northwest Action Chess Championship sponsored by the Portland Chess Club on Saturday, April 27, from 10 to 7 p.m.
Children of all ages will have an opportunity to join artists in making their own chess sets. Construction techniques will be demonstrated and participants will be encouraged to create fantasy sets.
Children 6-16 are admitted free for the day when accompanied by an adult. General admission is $7 and all supplies will be provided.
Maryhill Museum has a world renowned collection of international chess sets with nearly 100 on permanent display.
Also on display is Candy, Clay and Crayons, an exhibit that features chess sets created by students from throughout the Northwest. Highly original, the sets are made of paper, clay, wire, sea shells, and an endless variety of materials...all colorful and whimsical.
Throughout the day many of the Northwest' finest chess players will compete along with players of all ability levels and ages. In Action Championship play there is a total of 30 minutes per player and each player starts and stops the clock with each move.
Players will participate in five games total and generally play with others who are fairly equal in wins and losses. By the end of the day, new players will be awarded a national ranking, while veteran players may move up in rank. Both chess professionals and novices compete for cash awards.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with an entry fee of $25.
