On November 13, Skamania County hosted a public workshop to discuss the Wind River Boat Ramp Improvement Project.
The existing ramp serves over 10,000 boats annually. Over the past four4 years, the county has applied for and received funds from the Boating Facilities Program administered by the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office (formerly IAC) to acquire land and provide planning and permitting for improvements.
Thus far, the County has acquired a 15 acre parcel of property, surveyed and mapped the property, and developed alternatives for launch and parking to accommodate approximately 100 cars and trailers.
Three alternatives were presented at the meeting:
1. Expansion of the entry road to allow on road parking for cars and trailers.
2. Construction of an entirely new ramp just North of Highway 14 (preferred)
3. Expansion of existing ramp and parking.
The preferred alternative provides the best option in terms of visual impact, long term maintenance impact, and useability according to consultant Andrew Jansky of Flowing Solutions, who was hired by the County to pursue this portion of the improvement.
This alternative will be presented to the Skamania County Board of Commissioners in mid January.
Once the concept is approved, the process of design, engineering, and permitting will begin. The county will then be seeking grant funds to construct the new project. Completion could be as early as 2010.
