The Community Pride Week cleanup campaign, the area's annual "spring cleaning," will kick off on Monday, April 21 and continue through Sunday, April 27.
Sponsored by the Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, the event is designed to encourage local residents and merchants to clean yards and businesses of unsightly debris, junk, tree limbs, and recyclable items that have accumulated over the winter. It is also a time for businesses to spruce up their appearance before the summer tourist season gets going strong.
The big weekend push will be on Friday, April 25 (noon to 5 p.m.), and continue through the weekend, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Discarded items will be accepted at the same location as last year: directly east of SDS Lumber Co. and across from the water treatment plant in Bingen.
No hazardous wastes can be accepted, nor are grass clippings or leaves allowed.
General trash can be dropped off at the site, with a $3 per load voluntary donation requested.
"This is no free day at the dump; this is to promote beautification of the community," said Debra Reed, manager of the Mt. Adams Chamber.
As has been traditional since the cleanup event first got started in 1996, used tires will be accepted, but at a small cost: $2 per passenger and light truck tire. Semi truck tires can be discarded for $7 each.
In a new slant to the cleanup, the Gorge Rebuilding Center will accept used or leftover building materials.
"That's the big news this year," said Reed. "We'll be collecting good, used, salvageable building materials -- sinks, tile, cabinets, doors, even boards from buildings that were demolished."
