But they mustered just two points in the third quarter to fall behind 27-23 and missed 10-of-12 free throws in the final stanza of a game that was theirs for the taking.

Columbia enjoyed its last lead of the night at 33-32 when junior Chelan Weiler drove to the basket and scored. She also got fouled but couldn't convert the three-point play.

Weiler's miss at the line was the second of six straight during the final 4:30 of play.

Hockinson regained the lead with 2:34 remaining. Daron Dean sank two free throws to put the Hawks up 34-33.

All told, the Hawks made 7 of 11 from the line in the fourth quarter and 17 of 27 overall. The Bruins ended up 9 for 25 after starting out 5 for 10.

Sophomore Ericka Ziegler accounted for all nine CHS "makes" (in 16 attempts) and finished with a game-high 15 points.

Columbia spotted Hockinson a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes but closed the first quarter with a 10-2 run.

In the second, Hockinson got within one point twice. But five points by Ziegler gave CHS its biggest lead of the night at 19-13.

The game got away from Columbia less than three minutes into the third quarter.

Bruins Coach Mike Yarnell got tagged with a technical foul by referee Roger Mortensen at 5:19 that enabled Hockinson's Lani Abbott to tie the game at 21 with a pair of free throws.

Hockinson's first lead came two minutes later, when Chelsea Peterson converted two foul shots for a 23-21 Hawks edge.

Woodland 89, at Columbia High 44:

The Beavers fought off a Bruins rally in the third quarter last Thursday, posting their eighth Trico Division victory in eight starts.

Columbia (1-8 in Trico, 7-10 overall) trailed by 15 points after one quarter and by 16 at the half but trimmed Woodland's lead to nine by scoring the first seven points of the third quarter.

"But then their coach called a timeout and when they came back out, they got back to playing the kind of basketball we've come to expect from Woodland," Bruins Coach Mike Yarnell.

The Beavers scored 17 of the next 19 points after that break to increase their lead to 56-32 entering the fourth quarter.

Still, Yarnell saw Columbia's third-quarter run at Woodland, and its 38-20 victory in the rebound battle, as signs of the Bruins' growing maturity.

"We've got a lot of respect for Woodland, but we're past the point of being intimidated by them," Yarnell said, adding, "Hopefully, we earned a little respect from them too."

Ericka Ziegler led the Bruins with 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
