Columbia High turned the ball over 28 times but still found a way to beat Dufur, Ore., 38-35, in non-league girls basketball action there Dec. 5.
Down 23-16 at halftime, the Bruins (2-0) put forth a strong offensive effort in the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead. They then closed the Rangers out in the fourth, winning the period 7-5.
"Their press and half-court trap gave us problems in the first half," Bruins Coach Mike Yarnell said. "But in the third quarter we found a way to beat it and get to the basket."
Jenny Pulido paced the Bruins, scoring a game-high 11 points and and pulling down seven rebounds. Chelan Weiler added 10 points.
Defensively, Columbia used pressure to cause its own problems. CHS's trapping defense forced a multitude of Dufur turnovers and produced 25 steals (14 in the second half).
Shannon McNallan was CHS's top ball-hawker; she recorded seven steals. Ericka Ziegler was next with five steals, while Pulido and Kelsey Kidd each tallied four thefts.
Moreover, Columbia had the advantage in rebounds, winning the battle of the backboards 28-24; that included a 14-9 margin on the offensive glass.
In junior varsity action, Dufur defeated Columbia (0-2), 46-18.
