It was a young lineup that took the field for Columbia High's 2006 fastpitch season-opener March 14 against visiting Corbett, Ore.
The Bruins started five freshmen and three sophomores. Their overall inexperience showed as the Cardinals shut them out, 10-0.
"Corbett is a well-coached team with a high-quality pitcher," Bruins Coach Jeff Lindstrom noted.
Dani Gilderhus, CHS's only senior starter, had its one extra-base hit--a double--though the Bruins put their fair share of runners on base and in scoring position.
Lindstrom said several batters walked and sophomore Kristie Morris was hit by a pitch. The Bruins least productive inning was the third--three up, three down.
On two occasions, Columbia loaded the bases, to no avail.
Still, the score was only 4-0 after four innings as freshman starter Michelle McMillen made a strong varsity debut.
Defensively, the Bruins had their ups (they turned two double plays) and their downs (they committed three errors).
