Columbia High's boys track and field team defended its Bruin Booster Invitational title last Saturday, thanks to three record-setting performances.
Seniors Teddy Davis and Keith McMillen, and CHS's 4x400-meter relay team established new meet standards to help Columbia hold off Estacada, Ore., 124-112, in the nine-team competition.
All told, five meet records fell during the daylong meet at CHS Stadium.
Davis led the way for the Bruins, winning three events and placing second in a fourth on his way to his second consecutive Athlete of the Meet award.
He set a new meet mark in the 110-meter high hurdles, with a winning time of 15.88 seconds. Davis' performance eclipsed that of previous record-holder Landry Milnes, who ran 15.91 in 1997 for CHS.
Davis also prevailed in the high jump (6-0) and the triple jump (38-3). He finished second in the long jump (20-21/2).
"Teddy was less than 100 percent, so for him to win three events shows what kind of competitor he is," Bruins Coach Doug Miller noted.
McMillen warmed up for his anchor leg of the 4x400 relay with a 50.98 effort in the open 400.
His time wasn't a personal record, but it was a meet record by nearly two seconds. The old standard was 52.64 by Washougal's James Nesmith in 2000.
The 4x400 relay crew of freshman Matt Lovrin, senior Connor Williams, junior Adam Neff and McMillen shaved .15 seconds off the meet record, set in 1997 by CHS.
If it hadn't been for a headwind on the home stretch, the Bruins foursome may have broken the school record of 3:29.
"They didn't get [the school record] Saturday, but they'll get it before the season ends," Miller said.
Estacada sprinter Kevin Dart posted the day's other meet records. He took first in the 100 in a time of 10.79, and doubled in the 200 with a time of 23.15.
Neff placed second in both races. His 10.94 in the 100 was a PR; his 23.25 in the 200 was not.
Lovrin also set a PR, winning the 1600 in a time of 4:46.75 to remain undefeated at that distance.
Senior Mike Wild scored victories for CHS in the shot put (46-4) and the discus (145-51/2).
Sophomore Brett Schutt contributed to the winning cause by finishing second in the pole vault (with a PR of 12-6) and third in the 300 low hurdles (44.45).
Classmate Chris Davis furnished a fourth in the long jump (18-9) and a fifth in the triple jump (35-21/2).
Glenwood freshman Bron Tomeo won the pole vault, clearing 13-6 to establish a new PR.
Team scoring:
Columbia 124, Estacada 112, Washougal 89, White Pass 57, Trout Lake 50, Stevenson 37, Mossyrock 21, Lyle 14, Glenwood 13.
