Enjoy a wide variety of art, music and special holiday festivities provided by the many talented artists of our area. The place to do all this, and more, is the season's last First Friday event, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 in downtown Hood River.
The Hood River Downtown Business Association will be hosting the Downtown Holiday Parade in conjunction with First Friday and will begin on Oak and 5th Street traveling down Oak Street and finishing at Overlook Memorial Park. Join organizers there for the Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony beginning at 6 p.m.
Performance singing at the tree will be the White Salmon High School Jazz Choir and local Girl Scout Troops. Also, look for Santa strolling about town spreading holiday cheer.
Join others for Art, Walk, Talk: a guided visit with artists. Guest guide this month is Leith Gains, an energetic force behind our area's Arts in Education program.
The guided walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Columbia Art Gallery, 101 Fourth Street. Featured at the gallery is Heather Marlow -- silk fusion.
Marlow tests the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional art in her works of silk fusion -- a technique in which dense webs of silk fibers are bonded and then sculpted. Color inspires her, guides her, and carries much of the emotional message in her work, so Marlow carefully dyes her silks by hand for maximum effect.
At 7 p.m. the walk will continue to Waucoma Bookstore, 212 Oak Street with Peter Marbach & Janet Cook -- photography and writing.
Just off the press! A fabulous new book on Mt. Hood. Marbach has filled page after page with photographs of truly stunning beauty in which to lose yourself, and Hood River News writer Cook has contributed a lovely text. Marbach will talk about the hours and hours spent in reflection, in process, in collaboration, and in well-worn hiking boots behind every split-second drop of the shutter.
Stop three at 7:30 p.m. will be A Salon Day Spa Boutique, 209 Oak Street with Evlory Dearing -- abstract expression in oils and acrylics. Dearing's art is given substance and foundation by her classical training and the cross-culturalism of her heritage and her world travels. It is her willful spontaneity and open-hearted desire to see, to feel, and to express that possess her abstract canvases.
Pacific Power's Blue Sky renewable energy program will be offsetting a total of 5,589 kwh of energy for Hood River Downtown Business Association's Holiday display this season. That is equivalent to not releasing 3091.2 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere, not driving 3312 miles by car and planting 321 trees.
During the First Friday event in December you are encouraged to bring a can of food for our local food bank. The HRDBA and F.I.S.H. will have drop off stations set up in front of Dog River Coffee, Taco Del Mar and the Christmas Tree Lighting at Overlook Memorial Park (2nd and State Streets). In exchange for your canned goods, there will be a complementary cup of hot chocolate or coffee with your name on it.
