CASCADE LOCKS -- Mayor Roger Freeborn is well pleased with the success of the first Mayor's Ball March 2 at Port Marina Park.
More than 300 people attended the festivities to honor 70 community volunteers -- and raised enough money to pay expenses and add $2,000 to the July 4 fireworks fund.
"I challenge all other mayors in the Gorge to schedule something like this because it was a great way to say `thank you' and foster community spirit," said Freeborn.
Bob Willoughby, city manager, was surprised by the high number of participants given historical averages about low turnout on first-time events.
"I told him he'd be lucky if even 30 people showed up," smiled Willoughby.
The lively evening on the waterfront drew people from as far east as Goldendale and from Portland in the west. The big draws of the evening were the social gaming provided by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in the visitor's center, and tribal dancing, a catered dinner, and DJ entertainment aboard the docked sternwheeler.
"We had a real mix of people and activities and everywhere I've gone this week people are asking me when we are going to do something like that again," Freeborn said.
He hopes to establish the Mayors Ball as an annual event -- and, if voters allow, host next year's event by capturing a second term in office this November.
