&nbps;Boys soccer club Gorge United of White Salmon suffered its first defeat of the season here last Saturday, losing "a hard-fought, closely contested game" to the CW Bears, 1-0.
The lone goal of the 90-minute match came in the 42nd minute, off a Bears corner kick that resulted from a midfield turnover by United.
Noted United Coach Pero Lovrin: "Our corner kick defense reaction was slow and that was the big difference."
Before then, each team put together several scoring opportunities during a first half of action that Lovrin said was "on balance, an even game."
In the second half, United continued to pressure and created a number of scoring chances that it was unable to finish.
"We definitely were dominating but at times we were unable to make the extra pass that makes a big difference," Lovrin noted.
Overall, though, United demonstrated its game is equal to that of the U-19 league's defending champions.
"We played the best team in the league and came away knowing that we can compete with them, despite being a depleted team due to injuries and sickness," Lovrin said.
