Similar to a western-style Jon Stewart or the 1920s cowboy humorist and political pundit Will Rogers, New York Times bestselling author Jim Hightower will bring his blend of political savvy and comedic timing to a Feb. 12 benefit for the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace.
Hightower, a syndicated columnist, national radio commentator and publisher, will visit Hood River for an evening of political insight pitched with wit and humor.
Beginning at 6 p.m. at Riverside Church, located at Fourth and State streets, Hightower will present his trademark hometown delivery of national and international events and issues.
Best known for two published books entitled "Thieves in High Places" and "Swim Against the Current," along with his nationally syndicated radio appearances, Hightower will bring a new message to his presentation next Saturday.
The Austin, Texas, native's latest engaging topic is entitled "Put Up - Not Shut Up," and addresses the "fight for our future."
Words of wisdom and provocation from Hightower include both humorous advice such as "Never hit a man with glasses; hit him with something much heavier," to "Question authority, trust your values, seek alternatives and swim against the current."
Donations will be accepted at the door for this all-ages event, and proceeds will support the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace, an affiliate of Rural Organizing Project and Oregon PeaceWorks.
A $20 donation for adults is suggested but no one will be turned away.
