THE DALLES — Wasco County staff members voiced support for a plan to place $15 million in tax abatement windfall from Google into an endowment that county administration estimates would earn between $2-$5 million a year after a 15-year maturity period.

During this hands-off time to allow the money to accumulate compounding interest, the proposed ordinance directs the county to put a “smaller but significant” additional investment into this fund every year from future abatement payments, which county staff said could be between $2.8-$5.6 million per year. After 15 years, this could be more than $75 million in principle alone.
