A 6-2 loss to a highly ranked competitor in the Class 1A 140-pound weight class last Saturday in the Tacoma Dome brought an end to Columbia High junior Kevin Kreps's first Mat Classic.
Kreps, just the fifth wrestler from CHS to compete on the state tournament mats, finished with a 1-2 record and scored two points to land CHS in 40th place among the 48 teams.
"Kevin wrestled great and represented the community of White Salmon very well," noted his coach, Rich Polkinghorn, who added, "It was a thrill to see someone from CHS on the mat at the Mat Classic."
Kreps opened his tournament on Friday against junior Gage Schmidt of Chelan. Polkinghorn said Kreps "wrestled tentatively" and lost by decision, 14-2.
In his second match of the first day, Kreps faced Warden junior Lupe Landeros in the consolation bracket. Kreps scored a quick takedown against Landeros on his way to a 10-2 victory.
On Saturday, however, Jenks stood between Kreps and a medal. Again, Kreps scored the first points and led 2-0 after one period.
In the second, though, Jenks seized control of the loser-out match with a reversal and a two-point near fall for a 4-2 lead. Jenks added two points in the third period and held on for the 6-2 decision.
"Kevin was disappointed in the loss but he understood that he had such a marvelous season," Polkinghorn said. "I am so impressed with Kevin'[s dedication and hard work this year. He truly deserved to be on tht floor competing with the best wrestlers in the state." by Sverre Bakke
