Takedowns were the focus of a low-key, season-opening wrestling tourney at Goldendale High School last week.
Bruin Coach Mike Muehlbauer said the Dec. 1 event was designed to give experienced wrestlers a chance to mix it up against wrestlers from other schools, and inexperienced wrestlers a chance to experience an actual high school match for the first time. Well, at least some of a match.
At this point of the season, The Dalles senior JR Scott is not focused on his record and what he has accomplished so far. His emphasis is on being more fundamentally sound with Intermountain Conference regional action coming up on Feb. 8-9.
JR Scott went 3-1 in consolation action to pick up fifth place, and senior teammate Glenn Breckterfield went 1-2 in his final matches at the OSAA State Wrestling Championships at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
HRV wrestling hosted its first home dual meet of the season Tuesday night, and for those in the audience expecting an exciting show, the action did not disappoint.
In a thrilling season finale Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum, Hood River Valley High School wrestler Christian Marquez countered an outside single leg attempt, dug his toes into the mat and powered through the off-positioned Matt Hofenbredl of Dallas.
