Sverre BakkeTrout Lake’s girls basketball team had its best offensive half of the season last Saturday in a 45-22 defeat of Greater Columbia 1B League opponent Klickitat.
The Mustangs shot 49% from the field and scored 30 points on their way to a 17-point halftime lead over the host Vandals.
Mckinzie Wurtz led the way for Trout Lake as she posted game-high totals in points (21) and rebounds (14). Wurtz scored 14 points from the floor in the first half on 7-of-10 baseline shots in the 12- to 17-foot range, Mustangs Coach Doug Dearden noted.
At the outset of the third quarter, the Vandals put together a small run that brought them within 34-18. The Mustangs responded, however, and pulled away to a 40-20 lead by quarter’s end.
The Vandals managed to slow down Wurtz in the second half with a box-and-one defense, but her teammates picked up some of the scoring slack. Beyyine Ozkan, Trout Lake’s leading scorer, put together a stat line of 12 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.
“It was a nice game for us, and nice to see the offense come together,” Dearden said. “It was also nice to see Mckinzie get it going in this game. In two games against Klickitat this year, she has scored 38 points.”
Last Saturday’s victory earned the Mustangs a sweep in their two-game GCB series with the Vandals.
Mackenzie Tuthill had 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals for Klickitat, which was missing starter Bailee Green, who was out with a concussion.
