Shea Kasenga of Underwood logged two personal records the last weekend in February at the Oregon Swimming Speedo 11-14 Short Course Championships at the Tualatin Hills Swim Center, near Beaverton.
The 11-year-old member of the Hood River Valley Swim Team established personal-best times in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing 16th overall in 2 minutes, 44.76 seconds (.15 improvement.
Kasenga also set a PR during a swim-off in the 50-yard breaststroke. The Osprey swimmer tied for 12th in the event earlier in the day, posting a time of 39.18 seconds (.07 off her PR).
In the swim-off for the second alternate position, Kasenga shed 1.74 seconds to finish for the win in a PR time of 37.44.
Moreover, Kasenga placed 19th in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.70 vs. her PR of 1:26.27) as part of a strong overall showing by the HR-VST Osprey.
On the weekend of Feb. 20-21, Skyla Hollowell, of White Salmon, and Amy Elliott, of Underwood, were part of an HRVST contingent that competed at the Oregon Swimming Speedo 10-and-Under Short Course Championships in Springfield.
Hollowell made a splash in all four events in which she was a participant. She teamed with Elliott, Marina Castaneda, and Mich-elle Graves for a 10th-place finish in the 9-10 girls 200-yard medley relay. The quartet finished in a PR time of 2:29.59; the girls’ seed time was 2:36.84.
Hollowell also swam three individual events. Her finest showing came in the 200 individual medley in the age 10 division. Hollowell placed 10th and dropped nearly five seconds of time, going from a seed time of 2:55.15 to 2:50.53.
The Osprey swimmer also recorded a PR in the 50 butterfly, in which she placed 29th in 37.53 (down from 37.85). Additionally, Hollowell finished 16th in the 200 freestyle, in just under one second off her PR (2:37.76 vs. her seed time of 2:36.93).
