Lyle/Wishram senior Gavyn Nelson takes aim in the 1B boys javelin last Friday. Nelson placed sixth in his first state meet with a throw of 144 feet, 8 inches.
Sverre BakkeThe bleachers at the javelin venue filled up slowly last Saturday, but by start time for the 1B girls event, they were full.
Conspicuous among the many school colors flying in the bleacher were the blue and white of the Lyle/Wish-ram Cougars.
The Cougars had three throwers in the field of 17, and all three were seeded in the second flight.
Senior MaeLynn Luke and junior Alex Cloud, last year’s runner-up, led the way as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Senior Lacy Carse was seeded fifth in her state meet debut. Only Luke and Cloud among the 17 had thrown more than 121 feet at the district or regional level the week before.
The news last Saturday came in the first round of throws, when fourth-seeded Ryan Anderson of Wiskah Valley fired off a strike of 128 feet, 6 inches. Anderson placed eighth at state as a junior.
Her opening throw set a high bar for the rest of the flight — and the field. The winning mark in 2015 was 129-2 vs. a 1B meet record of 132-1 set in 2010.
Only Carse made a run at Anderson’s mark. She threw a personal record 115-1 in her second attempt, and finished with 111-footer in round six. She finished second.
Luke, with a best throw of 109-5 in round two, had to settle for fourth place for the second year in a row.
Cloud, who got into the nine-thrower final as the ninth seed, finished eighth with a top mark of 101-9 in round four.
