TD girls post comeback victory

Brooke McCall forced a loose ball, Kailin Hoylman hopped on it and called timeout with one second left in regulation and the Riverhawks held on to complete a 10-point fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Sandy 48-45 in girl’s hoops tournament action Friday in Reynolds.

The Lady Pioneers led 38-30 through three quarters and after a quick hoop to start the final period lead ­ 40-30.

But Olivia Starks dropped three baskets, Lori Cimmiyotti and Hoylman hit jumpers and McCall sank a driving layup, as five different Hawk players scored points and the defense held Sandy to just two field goals in the last two minutes of regulation.

It was an impressive first win for The Dalles, given the situation and the stage.

“We told them after the game, ‘the other team did not give you that game. You took it from them by your hustle and team basketball,’” said TD coach Craig Compton. “Getting that first win of the season feels good. They deserved it.”

Overall, TD hit 17 field goals and went 14 of 18 from the free throw line. Starks led the Riverhawks with 15 points and seven rebounds and Hoylman chipped in 12.

Iliana Telles and Cimmiyotti added six points each, and McCall pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.

“They are going to grow from this,” Compton said. “We have a relatively young crew. This game made us realize that we are going to have to be a team that creates havoc to be successful. We will need to create scoring opportunities for ourselves with our pressure.”

The Dalles (1-2 overall) wrapped up Reynolds Tournament play Saturday. They hit the road Tuesday at 5:30 against Sheldon.
