Even a long layoff could not stop The Dalles girls basketball team from imposing its will over Hood River Valley.
Ellie Codding totaled 11 points and six rebounds, and Rainie Codding tacked on 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Lady Riverhawks, who led 29-10 at the half in what was a lopsided 51-24 final from Hood River.
“We were rusty offensively,” TD head coach Brian Stevens said. “You could see that we had not played a game in two and a half weeks, because we missed a lot of easy shots around the rim. In the first half, we shot 88 percent from the free throw line and that allowed us to build our lead.”
On the year, the Riverhawk defense allows 37.4 points a contest, but Tuesday’s solid effort was the second-lowest of the season since Nov. 28 against Dallas (20).
Against Hood River Valley (2-19 overall, 0-7 league), TD posted 29 pass deflections and 14 steals.
“Defensively, we were solid,” Stevens said. “We only gave up one layup the whole game.”
Jenna Miller checked in with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot, Lauryn Belanger had seven points, seven boards and an assist, and Kilee Hoylman hit for four points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
From off the bench, Grace Schatz reeled off four points, two rebounds and a steal, Augustina Decker chipped in two points, four rebounds and a steal, and Hanna Ziegenhagen chipped in two points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Stevens called the win a great all-around effort from everyone on the roster.
“When Hannah, Grace, Gus and Pearl got into the game, they kept up the defensive intensity and moved the ball extremely well,” Stevens said. “This was a complete team win.”
The Dalles (10-7, 3-2), the No. 4 seed, hit the hardwood Thursday versus No. 5-seeded Crook County, and if they win, they travel to No. 1 Redmond for a second-round matchup Saturday.
A loss would drop the Hawks to a consolation game slated for Monday, with the winners of that game moving on for matchups Tuesday for the third and final state spot.
