Just a month ago, The Dalles boys basketball team put up a 2-7 record and looked to be in danger of the letting the season slip away.
Over the past 12 quarters, however, TD has picked up three consecutive wins over Stevenson, Wash., St. Helens and Crook County by an average margin of 6.7 points.
Jacob Hernandez posted 21 points, Josh Nisbet put in 15 and Dalles Seufalemua added 12 points in a 61-54 Intermountain Conference win over Crook County Friday at Prineville.
Through the first two periods, Crook County led 30-29 and then used a 15-14 third-quarter tally to make it a 45-43 cushion entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Hernandez scored nine of his points, Nisbet and Seufalemua cashed in three points and Jack Bonham hit a pair of free throws as part of an 18-9 rally.
Following Hernandez, Nisbet and Seufalemua were Oscar Fernandez, who had eight points, Aidan Telles ended up with three and Bonham finished with two points, as the Riverhawks canned 23 field goals, six 3-pointers, and shot 9 of 21 from the line, 6 of 15 in the fourth quarter.
“We gave a great effort tonight, despite poor free throw shooting,” TD head coach Nathan Morris said. “It was definitely our most complete game of the year.”
No. 14-ranked Crook County (8-7 overall, 0-1 league) went off for 19 field goals, 10 3-pointers, and sank 6 of 10 from the line.
Kevin Sanchez had a team-leading 23 points, Thaiden Mullan was good for 11 points and Shane Kessi scored seven points.
The Dalles (5-7, 1-0) hosted La Grande Tuesday in a non-league contest and then hosts Redmond (3-10, 1-0) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
