Practice makes perfect.
But for Riverside these past two meets, it had help from a little thing called character.
According to the coaching staff, “Character lessons” are a regular part of the team’s training regime.
For the past couple of weeks, the character spotlight has been on courage—and based on the athletes’ performances, the lesson was well-learned.
“They have improved so much!” Coach Audrey Hinatsu exclaimed.
Her words were punctuated by the slew of top placements earned by Riverside at recent meets in Portland and Tigard.
At the Bulldog meet in Portland, the level 4 team took second place, while level 3 dominated with first.
Hailey Birch and Saige Brennan were all-around champions in their respective divisions, Brennan claiming top level 3 scorer in the entire meet.
Armed with courage and spunk, Dylan Vaivoda received the “Bulldog” award for her aggressive bars routine.
Eight-year-old Sydney Stanley shone on bars too. She won level 3 champ of the whole meet with her outstanding score of 9.75.
On vault, four Riverside gymnasts were champs in their age groups. Ava Krentz and Hope Pipkin tied for first in the meet, with whopping scores of 9.75 each.
“They all improved at that meet in one event or another,” Coach Abby Minnick said.
The meet in Tigard saw Riverside on the top of the podium as well.
The team had two all-around wins and nine first place awards in individual events.
The all-around honors went to Abby Beal and Willow Jenkinson, who claimed first in their age divisions.
Jenkinson was top level 3 gymnast at the meet, rising above 89 other competitors.
The team took its place among the best, with level 3 coming in second place and level 4 taking third.
But triumphs for Riverside went beyond placements, medals or even trophies.
When asked what her biggest surprise at the meet was, thirteen-year-old Hallie Haskins replied, “Doing my tuck off the bar by myself.”
And at Portland, she’d overcome another long-time obstacle—performing her back tuck on the floor without her coach standing there for her.
“I am proud of all our team for their courage these past two meets,” Coach Candy Smith said. “Many have done things they were afraid to do, and have learned to push past their fears.”
