Looking to make a big splash in the Big Sky Conference next winter, the South Wasco County Redside girls’ basketball team made its first appearance of the summer session with a pair of wins Monday at The Dalles Middle School.
The Lady Redsides kicked off action with a dominant double-digit win over Horizon Christian, and then capped the night with a 24-22 win over Sherman.
Although SWC lost seniors Peggy Espeland, Paris McCartney, Shelby Moody, Roxanne O’Neal, Lisa McNamee and Molly Foreaker, there are five returners and eight newcomers ready to take the next step.
Last season, SWC won seven games, but went on a 4-1 streak to earn a district play-in berth.
The Redsides had their season cut short after a 30-24 loss to Sherman on Feb. 18 in Moro.
On the court Monday were key returners Allie Noland, Ally Muhleman, Chelsey Doudna, Tatum Hahn and Cassie Davis.
Jacqueline Noland, Bailey Hahn, Abby Birman, Noel Rager, Kyrsten Sprouse, Lindsey Hull, Jada Myers and Madisen Davis make up some depth on the roster for second-year head coach Bill Mead and assistant Randy Barton.
In all, the Redsides participate in five other tournament games, with the next one slated for June 9 at TDMS against Goldendale, Wash. (7:30 p.m.) and Sherman (8:30 p.m.).
On Friday, June 12, the Redsides head to Wahtonka High School for two games versus Horizon Christian and Lyle-Wishram with first tip set for 5:30 p.m.
From June 15-17, SWC hosts its three-day hoops camp in Maupin.
