The Jumpstart Elementary School cross country run has seen its popularity rise for the past 20 years.
Athletes representing Dry Hollow, Colonel Wright and Chenowith set a new record in signups with 400 on board last Tuesday at Sorosis Park in The Dalles.
Chenowith saw an increase from 73 to 110, Colonel Wright added 125 from 119, and Dry Hollow had a previous best of 98 and saw an increase of 130 to claim the championship.
“CES, CW and DH really turned in a great effort this season,” said event coordinator Tom Conklin. “Each of the three elementary schools turned in a personal school record and a grand record total of 400 participants. There were so many kids, they left a worn trail at the finish line.”
Place ribbons were offered to the top-10 finishers in each race, boys and girls, and the awards were provided by the Colonel Wright PTO and Dry Hollow PTA.
In the month and change leading up to the 20th annual run, Conklin and his fellow physical education instructors Marcy Brown, Samantha Tenneson and J.R. Runyon provided these athletes with directions to help them compete in these long-distance runs.
Aside from the event, Conklin’s aim is to teach all aspects of cross country and health and an active lifestyle, so children develop a love of the sport.
Athletes do not start competing in cross country runs until middle school, so this is a teaser for the youngsters as they try to find their niche.
Chenowith also had 11 teachers in attendance for 25 points, and Colonel Wright totaled 21 points after its nine staff members at Sorosis Park.
“We are quite impressed with the staff turnout as well,” Conklin said. “We (elementary school physical education PLC) are considering designing a trophy for the greatest staff participation starting with this year’s race too. Our PLC is so pleased at the staff volunteerism at the registration table, finish line and all places that needed help.”
