When given a chance to shine, whether as a hitter or catcher, The Dalles sophomore Emma Weir takes advantage of her opportunities.
Weir went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI, as the No. 10 Riverhawks broke open a 5-3 lead with eight runs in the top of the third inning to post a mercy-ruled 13-3 victory over Hermiston Friday at 16th Street Ballpark.
“It makes me feel good that I have an opportunity to bat,” Weir said. “I try to go out there and do my part to help this team any way that I can. I just try to hit. And if I am playing in the field, I just try to field the ball, make the catches and all the throws. I just try to contribute to the team.”
In the third inning, the Riverhawks sent 13 batters to the plate and rattled off eight hits and two walks.
Weir started the scoring with a one-out, base-loaded RBI single to left, on a 3-2 pitch, to score courtesy runner Shaynie Watson.
Still with the bases loaded, Kailin Hoylman drove in Sierra Watson and Lori Cimmiyotti with a two-run single to increase the lead to 8-3.
After a pitching change, Weir stole home and Hoylman swiped second base on a double steal.
Kathryn Bradford walked and Ruthie Ford singled to load the bases for Grace Helyer.
Helyer rifled a shot to the left field fence for a two-run double scoring Hoylman and Bradford to run the lead to 11-3.
Ford scored on a wild pitch, and then Sierra Watson capped the frame with an RBI infield single scoring Hannah Wallis to put the mercy rule in place.
TD starter Maddy Bradford shut down Hermiston in the fourth inning.
She allowed two singles in the fifth frame, but then got defensive plays from Sierra Watson at shortstop, Helyer gunned down a base stealer from her catcher’s position, and Ford made the final putout from third base to end the game.
“It really boosts our confidence a lot to come off a strong win like that knowing we can accomplish what we are capable of,” said Hoylman. “We had amazing hits, our defense was amazing and both Maddy and Grace did a great job keeping us together. I think this win just boosts our confidence a little bit more going into our next game.”
Maddy Bradford allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Bradford also had two hits and a walk, Lori Cimmiyotti had a hit and two runs scored and Helyer went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Sierra Watson added three hits, a run and an RBI, Ford went 2 for 3 with a run and two stolen bases and Hoylman had two hits, a walk, a stolen base, a run scored and three RBIs
TD (16-8 overall, 5-5 league) is at No. 2-ranked Pendleton (19-4, 8-2) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
