Austin Kaseberg went 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and the Sherman Huskies opened play with six runs in the first inning and rode that surge to a 9-3 victory Tuesday in a non-league baseball game played in Moro.
“Today was a good day,” said Sherman head coach Joe Justesen. “We hit the ball and had timely hits. We hit the ball in that first inning and just worked on things to get better for down the road.”
In that opening frame, the Huskies used two walks, four passed balls and RBI hits from Kaseberg and a run-scoring triple from Max Martin to jump ahead by six runs.
Sherman (11-10 overall, 1-5 league) added single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to go out in front, 9-0.
Maverick Winslow earned the win from the mound with three innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander struck out four and walked two.
In the final three innings, Martin, Kyle Fields and Treve Martin combined to allow three runs on two hits. Fields struck out the side in a scoreless sixth inning.
“We threw a lot of strikes, we didn’t walk many people and we had players doing what they were supposed to do,” Justesen added. “They made the plays.”
Of his four hits, Kaseberg slugged two doubles and scored two runs, Max Martin had two hits, scored a run and added an RBI, and Bradley Moe went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Justesen has his team geared towards a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday versus No. 5-ranked Dufur (21-3, 6-0), and after that, a district play-in road game next Tuesday against either Heppner or Irrigon for a chance to move on to district tournament play at Quinton Street Ballpark in The Dalles on Saturday, May 23.
“We are all focusing on the one game we have to win in order to get to the district playoffs. I like where we are at at this point,” Justesen said. “I think we can compete with anybody on the other side. We will lay it all out there and see what happens.”
