DUFUR – Recent Dufur High School graduates Curtis Crawford and Chloe Beeson were stalwarts in every sport they played.
Over a four-year span, the awards and accolades piled up with each earning all-league and all-state recognition, and Beeson grabbed Player of the Year honors in volleyball.
Last week at Dufur High School, athletic director and superintendent Jack Henderson served as the Master of Ceremonies in the school’s year-end awards banquet and presented awards and scholarships to several students and athletes.
Crawford and Beeson were each presented with Ranger of the Year awards for their standout 2017-2018 sports seasons.
“The award was very special to receive,” said Crawford, who, along with Ian Cleveland, is attending George Fox University in the fall to play football. “The last few years, I would watch previous Dufur High School graduates receive the Ranger of the Year award and I would always think about how great it would feel to receive that trophy. Dufur always has incredible athletes, which makes this award even that much more humbling.”
From second-team all-Big Sky Conference as a sophomore and a junior volleyball athlete, Beeson worked her way earned first-team all-league honors and had her name called as the Big Sky’s Player of the year.
She also added all-league praise in basketball.
Back in November, Beeson went through practice with the Clackamas Community College volleyball squad and secured a spot on the roster.
She begins practice during the summer and will balance those sessions with classes geared toward a degree in education and her goal of becoming a teacher.
“Athletics have really helped shape me into the person I am, because they showed me how I handle tough, stressful situations, and taught me better, more beneficial ways to handle those situations for myself and others around me,” Beeson said. “Through sports, I have learned how to become a leader, and what the leadership role is like. By learning these skills, it will help me in the long run, and I’m very thankful I have been a part of the Dufur athletics and community.”
Added to Ranger of the Year, Crawford received the Ken McCullough Memorial Scholarship and Beeson had her name called as the winner of the Anderson Perry Scholarship.
Haili Wolf-DePriest claimed the Bob Stevenson Athletic Scholarship Heisler Scholarship, the Jim Shultz Memorial Scholarship and the Zipporah G. Woods Scholarship.
Jackie Culps was named as the Dufur Alumni Scholarship and Dufur Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Scholarship winner, Ian Cleveland picked up the Friends of Dufur School Scholarship, and Morgan Brumley was named the Wasco Lodge Masonic Scholarship recipient.
Wade Blake, Matthew Sipe and Wolf-DePriest were selected for the Crosby Scholarship for the Advancement of the Sciences; and the quartet of Crawford, Culps, Wolf-DePriest and Daphne Hunt Randy Rood Memorial Scholarship.
