Dufur’s Zach Christiansen qualified for state after a second-place finish in the Individual Flags event to lead Dufur to its second consecutive Mini Team championship at the Central District’s third and final regular-season Oregon High School Equestrian Team meet ending last Sunday at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond.
For the season, Christiansen placed seventh amongst all levels with 77 points to earn OHSET’s High Point Individual Versatility. In his timed events in 2015, the Ranger junior had 52 points for 25th place.
Amongst a large field of Individual Flags participants, Christiansen finished with a time of 10.358 seconds to secure fourth place in the standings, less than a second from first place winner, Amanda Blevins, of Redmond (9.559). His season point total of 41 placed him second overall to punch a state ticket. Ridgeview’s Emily Geist won the IF title with 52 points in three events.
Dufur scored 130 points to lead the Mini team classification with 28 of the 158 total points for the year coming in team events.
Christiansen had a base time of 12.131 for 14th place in the Figure 8 event, a mark that was 1.1 seconds from first-place winner, Donna Sleveking, of Mountain View (10.969).
In Western Showmanship, Christiansen scored 55 points for 28th place and he added 53 points to his totals in Working Rancher to secure 16th place overall.
Christiansen had two catches and a total time of 16.29 for 16th place overall. After his opening run of 3.6 seconds, Christiansen was in 13th place, until a mark of 12.69 in his final run.
Harley Burgener placed 27th in Showmanship with a score of 67
Burgener had one of her best scores of the season in Western Showmanship with 13th place and a score of 78 points.
Burgener also had a solid effort in Steer Daubing with a two-run time of 4.3 seconds with two catches for fourth place
Dufur 19th in Team Penning with one pen and one cow in a total time of 50.979
The four-day state championships are in Redmond from May 14-17.
