THE DALLES — The Sherman High Huskies and the South Wasco County High Redsides qualified for the Class 1A volleyball state playoffs following wins in Saturday’s Big Sky League district tournament in The Dalles.
The Huskies (7-6 league, 12-13 overall) won, 3-2, over Wheeler County in a semifinal contest before losing 3-0 to champion Ione/Arlington in the championship match. The Cardinals, who beat South Wasco in the semifinals, won the Big Sky district title a second straight year.
“After finishing third in the East Division, it feels great to finish second in the district tournament. … We have a really young team and at the beginning of the season, we only had two players on the team that had any varsity experience," Sherman Coach Caitlin Cruickshank said.
“We had kind of a rough start [won four of first 11 games], but it’s not how you start, it’s where you finish, and we’ve had a strong finish to the season.”
The Huskies qualified for the 32-team state playoffs for the first time since 2022 and they’ll play the No. 5-ranked Casco League champion St. Paul High Buckaroos (12-0 league, 20-7 overall) Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at St. Paul High School. The Huskies reached the district tourney by winning an Oct. 23 cross-over match over Dufur.
South Wasco, the Big Sky West Division and overall regular season champion (12-1 league, 21-10 overall), clinched a playoff spot following a 3-1 win over Wheeler County in the third-place match. The Redsides advanced to state for a seventh consecutive season.
The Redsides meet the Mountain West Conference champion Triangle Lake High Lakers (14-2 league, 15-3 overall) in the Oct. 30 first round at Blachly (near Eugene). I’m glad that we bounced back after the loss to Ione. The girls were all feeling pretty devastated after losing that game. They dug deep and came out and played their hearts out in the second game. … We still haven’t quite found our groove yet, but I think after beating Wheeler County, we’re starting to find it again,” Coach Shelley Iverson said.
Dufur had a five-game win streak going into its Oct. 23 home matchup against Sherman. Ione/Arlington advanced to the district tourney with a Oct. 23 first round win at home over Lyle/Wishram. The Cougars, guided by third-year Coach Shelby Casey, took third place in the Big Sky West Division standings. It marked their first ever Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) playoff appearance. The Cougars joined the OSAA in 2021 after previously competing in Washington in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
“While we were disappointed with the outcome, I am incredibly proud of our team’s effort and resilience throughout the season. This experience with help us grow as a team and we will use it as motivation for the future. … We will learn from this and come back stronger next season," Casey said.
