THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks snapped a two-game losing streak, winning two Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) boys soccer home games last week.
The Riverhawks (2-2 TVC, 6-2 overall) won 4-0 over Gladstone on Oct. 1 and 3-2 Oct. 3 over Estacada. Against Gladstone, the Riverhawks received two goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Ivan Santana and senior midfielder Hulises Najera.
The Riverhawks had to come from behind against Estacada. “Out of the chances we created, I think we probably capitalized on about 25 percent of them, so we need to improve on that a little more," Coach Jesus Granados said.
Granados was unable to attend the first half of the Oct. 3 game because he was injured in an accident prior to the 4 p.m. contest. He was able to attend the game later, and helped guide the team during the second half. The Dalles assistant Coach Matt Dallman was also absent from the game, as he was serving an Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) one-game suspension. The Dalles junior varsity coach Emmanuel Elias guided the Riverhawks at the outset of the game.
The Rangers led 2-0 through the first 63 minutes of the match. Santana, the Riverhawks’ leading scorer with 12 goals, scored twice over the next three minutes to tie the match.
“I almost lost my voice because I was yelling so much during the game,” said Santana. “Estacada played really well, and I had a feeling that we were probably underestimating them [Rangers], but we’re a Riverhawks team that is capable of making comebacks like this.”
The Riverhawks took the lead with seven minutes remaining when junior midfielder David Chavez emerged from a scramble of players in front of the net and booted in a shot from three yards. “I had to score when it mattered the most,” said Chavez, who scored his first goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his The Dalles High varsity career. “We had kind of a rough start at the beginning of the game. We’re a young team, but we just continue to work hard in practice so that we can improve.”
The two wins left the Riverhawks in third place in six-team TVC standings behind Crook County and defending league champion Madras.
