School news in brief

Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2013 to be eligible to attend.

Proof of birth (birth certificate or hospital record) and a copy of the immunization record are required at registration time. Parents must also bring in an electric bill, water bill, telephone bill or current lease agreement as proof of address. Registration will take place during regular school hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Health scholarship available

The Skyline Foundation’s Wayne M. Henkle, M.D. Scholarship is available for residents of western Klickitat or eastern Skamania counties who seek secondary education or further training in health care. Recipients must be dedicated to returning this area to work or volunteer in the health field for at least one year. The Foundation funds up to $2,000 of total scholarships per year (most recipients receive $500-$1,000), depending on the requested amounts and number of awards granted.

The annual application deadline is May 31. Applications are available at skylinefoundation.org (under programs), or contact the foundation at 509.637.2602.

National speaker visiting in May

Sandra Bloom, creator of the nationally-recognized Sanctuary Model of Care, is coming to The Dalles on May 21.

She will provide training from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with a break for lunch) at The Dalles Wahtonka High School on “creating sanctuary in our community.”

According to promotional materials, “You will learn about the ways that trauma and chronic stress have influenced our culture and what we can do to prevent further trauma from occuring here.”
